October Newsletter

And now a word from our Treasurer

Treasurer Sarah,

Hello!  The ASHRAE Society year is in full swing and we’re certainly feeling (and starting to look) like fall as the leaves change and temperatures drop.

In September, we held our sixth annual golf outing, benefitting the Lee Burgett Memorial Scholarship, created back in 2016 (there was year off due to Covid for those doing the math on that).  We had 30 golfers attend along with 10 volunteers.  The weather was great, and everyone had a good time.  It was great to hear stories about Lee from membership, past colleagues, and Lee’s wife, Nancy.  Lee served as President of ASHRAE in 2005-2006 and his theme of “Advancing ASHRAE Technology and Our Future” is still relevant today.

This spring, the scholarship was awarded to THREE stellar local college-bound high school seniors in the amount of $1500 each.   Elle Bolstad, of Luther High School, bound for UW- Madison in Chemical Engineering, Grace Lavold, of Onalaska High School is pursuing Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle and Connor Johansen, also from Onalaska High School is pursuing Mechanical Engineering at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.  We are proud to support these students and you never know, maybe they’ll be part of our Chapter if and when they return to the area.

I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at the October Meeting!

Building Moisture Management

This teaches psychrometrics in 10 minutes, really, and it’s funny on one slide. I tell my architect friends who’ve attended this that when the engineer says psychrometric they should reply, yah I get that, show me the chart (might be a bluff, but gets their engineer to look at it seriously!). Learn about the affects of moisture in materials. Understand moisture maps in building envelopes. Understand how breaches and bridges affect envelopes. Learn what ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, and Title 24 require for vapor barriers. This is a good one to invite AIA & ALA members to attend.

Recent Advancements in Glazing Technology, Fenestration Performance, and Energy Codes

This course is designed to educate architects and designers about the latest advancements in glazing and fenestration technology together with the most recent changes in the ASHRAE 90.1 and IECC commercial energy codes.  New technologies in glazing and framing will be discussed to improve energy efficiency in both new and existing buildings, as well as for use in on-site renewable energy production.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
